Harrisia simpsonii – Simpson’s Prickly Apple
A resilient native from Florida’s rocklands and piney flatwoods, thriving in the face of change.
Harrisia simpsonii, or Simpson’s Prickly Apple, is the most widespread of Florida’s native columnar cacti—but still rare and deserving of protection. Endemic to South Florida’s pine rocklands, coastal berms, and flatwoods, this cactus has adapted to some of the state’s harshest and most rapidly disappearing ecosystems, including Big Pine Key, where our cultivated variety originates.
This upright, shrubby cactus features green to blue-green stems, short white to amber spines, and gorgeous night-blooming white flowers, followed by round red fruit. Its tolerance for full sun and drought, along with its rugged beauty, make it a striking and low-maintenance addition to Florida-friendly gardens.
Hardy to around 25°F and tolerant of sandy, rocky, or alkaline soils, Harrisia simpsonii prefers a well-drained cactus mix and can thrive in full sun to partial shade. Like its cousins, it’s uncommon in cultivation but highly rewarding for native plant lovers and cactus enthusiasts alike.
Important Note: As a Florida-native cactus of conservation concern, Harrisia simpsonii is offered for sale only within Florida, in accordance with FWC and USFWS guidance. These plants are nursery-grown from ethically sourced seed, not wild-harvested.
